Traveling with vials:
cases, cold packs, airports.

A loose vial in a bag is one drop away from a bad day. Here is how to pack vials so they arrive intact, plus where to check the official rules before you fly.

Use a hard case with a secure cap

Glass vials crack when they knock together. A rigid single-vial case with a cap that will not twist open on its own protects the vial and the crimp top.

Keep them cold if they need it

Follow the storage directions that came with your vials. If they need to stay cold, use an insulated pouch with a cold pack, and keep a thin layer between the cold pack and the vial so it does not freeze.

Carry on, do not check

Checked bags can sit in very hot or very cold holds and get thrown around. Keeping vials in your carry-on keeps them with you and at cabin temperature.

Check the official screening rules

Airport rules for liquids, medication and cold packs change. Check the TSA website (or your country's airport authority) before you fly, keep original labels on, and carry any paperwork you were given with your vials.

How to Travel With Vials: Cases, Cold Packs and Airport Basics

Quick answers

Should vials go in carry-on or checked luggage?

Carry-on is usually safer: it avoids temperature extremes in the hold and rough handling. Check the official airport rules for your trip.

How do I keep a vial from breaking in my bag?

Use a hard single-vial case with a secure cap, and keep it in an inner pocket rather than loose in the bag.
